The Art of Music

The Art of Music

Do you have old artwork hanging around your house that you loved when you bought, but have grown to not love as much over the years? Maybe it did or didn't break your budget to buy, but still, you just couldn't get yourself to just toss it out. When we came upon this song lyric wall art project, we had a feeling it would be the perfect way to create a whole new piece of art from art, kind of like "Making Love Out of Nothing At All"... sort of kind of.

Go ahead, get inspired, and create a masterpiece that just sings to you.

Materials Needed:

  • Art from your home, thrift store or garage sale. Do not spend too much money on this or be too attached because you will be completely covering this in white paint (think Banksy). Whatever colors are in the painting will be the colors of your letters that show through, so pick wisely.  Watercolors will work best, smooth prints or a print on canvas like we used make it a little difficult to peel the letters off without removing some of your white paint.  So, if you use one of those, peel carefully (bumpy oil painting will most likely not work).
  • Vinyl Letters 2 inch in a font you enjoy looking at. Make sure you get enough sets or a large enough set to have all the letters you need for your song lyric.
  • Scissors
  • White Flat Spray Paint
  • Sheets or Paper to cover your work space

Step One:
Pick your art and song lyric

Step Two:
Cut out the letters you want to use, just into smaller rectangles so you can lay them out prior to sticking them down.

Step Three:
Lay out the letters how you like them.

Step Four:
Stick the letters down.  If you want to use a long ruler to make sure that they are straight go for it, or if you are not that type (like me) stick them on kind of intentionally messy so you can tell everyone you meant to do that.  Make sure the letters are stuck down very well with no bumps or bubbles.

Step Five:
Find a well ventilated area and cover the surface.  Spray paint in even light rows the white spray paint over your piece of art and stickers until you have covered it as thoroughly as you want.  We wanted a little bit of the background print to show through.

Step Six:
Allow paint to dry completely and then pull up stickers.

Doesn't this just make you happy?
