Let's Rock

By: Cari Thomas

Let's Rock

If you are like us, the floors in your house have an extra layer of sand all summer long, which we definitely do not complain about... How many people can say they spend the long summer days surrounded by sand, sunshine and waves?  This project will not only help to reduce the amount of beach you bring inside, but our river rock mat welcomes you home in a super organic and calming way.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 Roll of Solid Grip Rubber Shelf Liner in a neutral color
  • Silicone Adhesive (waterproof, flexible and able to withstand extreme temperatures)
  • (both of the above are available at any local hardware/home improvement store)
  • Approx. 250 River Rocks (these can either be collected from a creek/river or purchased in the garden section of a hardware/home improvement store/local rock supply yard)
  • Polyurethane Spray (only necessary if you collect your own rocks from nature)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Step One:

If you use pre washed and polished rocks from the store, skip this step. Wash your rocks and allow to dry over nite.

Step Two:

Select the length for your mat (the width is pre-decided by the width of the roll of liner you buy-our mat is 18"x24").  Measure and Cut the length. Use the ruler to cut it evenly.

Step Three:

Begin to lay your rocks out on your mat.  Find shapes that fit together nicely.  Do not worry too much if there are small gaps showing or if the rocks are uneven, once they are all on the mat the surface will work.  Make sure to not have any sharp or jagged sides pointing up. (your toes will not be happy if you do)

Step Four:

Once you have created your pattern you can begin the gluing process.  Going line by line, put a small dot of the adhesive on the back of the rock and stick back down firmly to the mat. Depending on your adhesive, it will require at least 6 hours to set and then a bit more time until it is able to be put outside, check the back of your tube for exact times.

Step Five:

If you use pre washed and polished rocks from the store, you can skip this step.

Seal the rocks and give them a nice shine with a polyurethane spray. Be sure to do this in a ventilated area.

That's it!  Lay down your mat by the front door and rock on.
