It all happened by accident: SantaBarbara.com's John Dickson chose business phone number 800-SAN-TABA (the first letters of Santa Barbara), which is only one letter/number off from 800-SAN-TACL (the first letters of Santa Claus). So every year at Christmas time, Dickson's line lights up with calls from kids who have misdialed, hoping to hunt down dear old Santa. Dickson - not wanting to spoil the fun - plays along. And since the number of calls received each year can reach the thousands, the Accidental Santa has helpers answer calls, too.
Kids who call 800-SAN-TABA (800-726-8222) between December 19 - 24, from noon - 8pm, will, in fact, reach Mrs. Claus, an elf, Uncle Bob Claus, or Jolly Ol' Saint Nick himself ... in a temporary call center set up in Victoria Court.
Luckily, Dickson understands that children's wishes are on the line.
